I've had two significant tire blow-outs since I first started riding ~5 years ago:
On my Prarie 400, I hit something and blew a 2" hole in the center of the tire. Duct tape and tire sealant made it possible to at least limp back ~20miles to my truck.
On my Brute Force, I ran over a FORK which proceeded to destroy the stock dunlops that were on the Brute.
In either case, it probably was less an issue with the tire construction than with odd debris on the trail.
Thus far, since purchasing ITP's for my Honda and Prarie and the Maxxis for the Brute, I've only had rim issues (blowing the bead, etc) due to massive rocks on the trails.
I'm eagerly awaiting the majority response on which tire to go with.. Out here, most trails are either massively rock & dirt or snow packed in the winter. I've yet to encounter too much heavy mud or sand.

I have 589's too and are replacing them for other reasons. They are great for rock crawl'n or mud, but other than that, I cant stand em! Too rough and unstable on side slides. We mostly ride fire roads with some rock crawling thrown in and snow. 589's absolutely SUCK in the snow unless you like to dig holes and stay stuck.
Too many of my friends roll Bighorns and nothing but rave reviews. A tire that does it all well. There is no other choice for me. Ordering up next week.

Scars are tatoos with better stories
That will be a sweet upgrade Loppy. I totally agree with your assessment of the 589's.Loppy wrote:I have 589's too and are replacing them for other reasons. Rocks: Great
Mud: Great
Roads: Rough
Snow: Gravedigger

That was the most bizarre trip ever....light drizzle...just a dreary day at the Eagle Lakes parking area at 5,500 ft. And near blizzard conditions, blowing snow, hard wind at Signal Peak nearing 8000 feet.

I think that's why I carry a tube ,bead breaker tire iron's on the trail you never know what can happen out there. That'a a pretty nasty puncture . I have some nasty gashes in my front tire's I think there on there last leg.Icant wait to get new tires...
