Lost ATV Rider

Postby Kendo » Tue Oct 19, 2010 8:10 am

Outside Foresthill. He staged at Robinson Flat and has been missing since Saturday. Just wondering if Dave or anyone else that knows the area well would be going up?

Search and Rescue is up there again today, but the area is just massive and dude could be anywhere.

I called Placer County Sheriff's Office and told them that I have a collection of track logs for that area (mine and Dave's) that might show likely locations for where an ATV rider would be. They are going to call me back if they want them.

OK, they called me back right away and said that the guy in charge of the search was very interested in my track collection. Here is the file (contains GPX and KML formats) in case any of you guys end up as part of the rescue operation. My E-mail to them:

===========
Hello,

Attached is the info that I called in about which will hopefully help you guys locate the missing ATV rider. The GPX and KML file include the same info, but the KML file is the best to use if you intend to use this in Google Earth. The track lines are color-coded as follows:

Black - A paved road. It is illegal for us to be on these, but a rider might take a short run down one to get to another trail.

Purple - Major dirt roads we would be on for getting from place to place.

Green - Similar to purple.

Blue - Minor roads that we would find more interesting than bigger roads.

Red - ATV trails or rough 4x4 roads. We find these (and yellow ones) to be the MOST interesting and would seek these out.

Yellow - Like red, but expert level

Pink - Unconfirmed routes that we found on maps but haven't yet ridden

If you need any other info, feel free to contact me:

Here is a news story about this:

http://www.kcra.com/mostpopular/25437596/detail.html
PLACER COUNTY, Calif. -- A search is expected to resume this morning for an all-terrain vehicle rider from Orangevale who appears to be missing in the Tahoe National Forest.

Officials planned to resume the search at sunrise near Robinson Flat. Authorities plan to look in a huge area between Foresthill and Soda Springs.

Jamie Michael Lewis, 51, left Robinson Flat on Saturday and was expected to return that day.

He was reported missing early Monday morning by family members.

Deputies from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Placer County Search and Rescue volunteers and air support from the California Highway patrol looked in the area on Monday.

Lewis is 5 feet 4 inches tall, has blond hair, blue eyes, a mustache and a goatee. He is an experienced ATV rider and he has no known medical issues.

Lewis was wearing a silver-and-black helmet and dark-colored coveralls. He was riding a 2008 dark green Can-Am ATV.
I'm glad they are searching all the way back to Soda Springs. That's where I stage and it is an easy ride to Robinson Flat from there. IMHO, some of the most interesting stuff in the area is back towards Soda Springs from Robinson Flat (Royal Gorge, FS 50 and the trails that branch off of it, etc.).

Well, if I thought they would accept my help (and my POS quad was running) I would head up there and volunteer my time. I don't know the area as well as you and Dave, but I do know it somewhat. Sure is a lot of area to cover when no one knows for sure where he was headed.

Always a good idea for those of you that ride alone to file a flight plan with a loved one before heading out. Hell, post it up here at a minimum, at least we'd know where to start looking for you.

Kudos to you Eric for keeping all that stuff so well organized!! =D>

Yeah, I was thinking about heading out there and riding from Soda Springs, but they didn't ask for help when I talked to them. I'm listening on the ham search & rescue repeater (146.64 on Donner Summit) and I don't hear any traffic. Me thinks they haven't called in the volunteers and may not want us out there gumming up their works(?).

I've only been out there twice and never much past Robinson Flat to the southwest (Dave and I tried but it was still snowbound back then). Dave is the man for that area. If anyone wants to organize an informal rescue operation, I can head in from this end and meet you guys out there. But if he's been gone since Saturday, it might end up being a body-finding mission. :(

Yup, solo riders should definitely tell someone where they're going. Even better is to have a SPOT and turn on the tracking mode on every ride like I do. I tell the wife where I'm parking, but I rarely know exactly where I'll be going, so SPOT lets her and anyone else see my current or last-reported position on my SPOT page. My 65-ish mile Saturday ride from Boca Springs is still on there, so if I was in trouble and someone was looking for me today, they would at least be able to get close. And if you ever have to hit the 911 button, helicopters should be overhead within a half hour.

And the crappy part is they wasted valuable time and resources looking for him. If it is true, please tell me why the hell he couldn't leave a fricking note or something on the truck. Maybe it's callous, but it really infuriates me. If you can't exercise one last act of common courtesy before you decide to take your own life, for the sake of your family at the very least, then you really are selfish.

"Goodbye cruel world, tell my family I love them."

Please feel free to copy and paste the above if you have any kind of future plans. Print on standard white paper and leave in plain view please.

Oy vey.

Odd stuff, for sure. I'm guessing there will be more story to this at some point.

I caught this on the radio this AM on the way in to work - first I heard of it. Unfortunately work kept me going in - but Placer has a pretty good SAR response. Glad GG got in touch to find out what could be useful to them. Maybe we should have a phone tree or something for things like this. Despite the outcome in this one, you have to make the effort.

I always file a flight plan with the wife here, she insists on it. I also have the cell (which gets coverage in the strangest places), plus two bands worth of ham radio as well. I'm extra careful as a solo rider too.

Just curiosity, but what prompted you to llok for him on the Megan's Law website??

This story adds even more intrigue to an already strange situation.
