Trail to Blumville (Plumas NF)

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Sat Aug 04, 2007 8:14 am

On the second day of my 2-day 'Voyage of Discovery' into Plumas NF, I encountered a fun little road/trail on my way home. It is 22N43Y and heads west from the big forest road 10 (23N10) about midway between Harrison Flat and Turkeytown mine. Here is a map excerpt with my track log:

The road starts off smooth, actually smoother than forest road 10. It crosses Hopkins Creek where there is a great campsite and some old mining equipment, then climbs on out to the west. Out in the middle of nowhere, right next to the road, you'll find this:

I thought that was strange on a road that didn't seem to go anywhere in particular. So naturally I kept going. Good thing I did, or else I would have missed seeing Blumville, with a population of 2-20: :)

Here is a wider shot of Blumville:

Blumville is about 100 feet past the point where you cross the south fork of Poorman Creek. This is also the point where the road ends and a somewhat tight and rocky 4x4 trail begins. It reminded me a bit of the jeep trails in Tahoe's Bear Valley OHV area. Not particularly difficult but still fun.

I went on out a ways then finally turned around because I still had a long ride back to where my trailer was, and wasn't sure about my gas situation. But the map shows this trail continuing on to county route 511 near Onion Valley Reservoir. I'll have to ride it to the end and do some more exploring in that area next time.
