Ruby's Inn (Utah) to Torrey (Utah)

Postby carlc44 » Thu Jan 17, 2008 3:37 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and I am looking forward to learning alot from you'all.

Anyone know if there is trail that covers the subject? I would be interested in making that ride next summer with some of my buddies.

Help is appreciated

CDogg,

Welcome aboard! We did that ride in 2006. Unfortunately, the maps we had weren't very good and we were uncertain about whether some of the better looking trails near Government Point were legal routes, so we stayed on the big dirt roads. Now that Utah has issued their OHV route CD, I can see that those trails were legal.

We did a side trip out to Powell Point along the way. Had bad weather for most of the ride and I lost my Garmin eTrex GPS to the rain/hail (1/2" hail stones, had to cower under a dead tree for a while).

Without GPS, we naturally took a wrong turn and rode into Bicknell instead of Bicknell Bottoms. The guys in the gas station showed us a "secret" route to get back on track at the beginning of the Velvet Trail section of Great Western Trail. We rode that, then rode on into Torrey around dusk. We were super-happy to get the last two rooms in the only motel that had a laundromat where we could dry out our soaked gear. :-)

If you'd like a track log in GPX format, PM me your E-mail address and I'll send it to you.

Thanks! We didn't shoot video that day because of the weather, but here are some pictures:

View from Powell Point looking one direction:

View from Powell Point looking in the other direction:

Me getting soaked as we were getting ready to leave Powell Point:

Image

Me standing near our hail-storm hide-out as the hail storm started to let up. I'm trying to smile, but silently cussing myself for forgetting my ski gloves:

Image

How I really felt right about then: COLD!

Image

What one of the Grizzlies looked like right about then. That's hail, not snow. Until we dove into these trees for shelter, it felt like someone was shooting us with marbles out of a sling shot as we rode along:

Image

Looking back out of our hail-storm hide-out at the road we were riding. Yup, that's hail, not snow:

Image

Later that day, we finally got down to lower elevations. We put the hammers down and used the warm/dry air to "air dry" us at about 55 mph.

But my e-Trex didn't dry out. This is when I learned to always buy waterproof GPS receivers!

This is near the beginning of the Velvet Trail (part of Great Western Trail), right around sundown. Cool trail. Torrey is 10-ish more miles further down the trail:

Image

Over 100 miles this day, 3rd day of a 6 day trip, only had 1 day less than 100 miles (the next one, when it got rougher going north). :)

You got it, KaTz. It's days like those that you never forget. And that's what it's all about: an ADVENTURE, right? 8)

Speaking of forgetting, you just reminded me of something. We DID shoot video that day. This one:

Riders on the Storm

Hah! With a title like that, how could I have forgotten? I'm gettin' old, KaTz.

If you look at the ending scene in that video, we're up on the plateau where the thunderstorm hit us. And if you look at the dark CuNim clouds out ahead of us... those are the ones that almost did us in!

P.S. - You'll have to excuse the dark corners, that was back when I didn't know how to operate a cam too well, and I didn't have it shoved all the way into the mount that let the cam survive the hail storm. And the middle parts are on Paiute 89, on another rainy day during that trip, way away from that place where we got hailed-on.

Oh boy it's more than also it's lookin down right stupid ,,

we had at the time our rain gear or shall we say our

oompa oompa rain pouncho's as in Smurf getup's

~forgive the spelling if im wrong here ~ just Turn away from the
computer and RUNNNNNNNN LOL

anyway if you ever thought a wet dog was bad we 3 were the
poster children for what not to look like when wet and muddy
and that is nothing compaired to what the quads looked like

but as with any adventure it's all about fun and livin to talk about it later !!!

and by the WAY Id give anything to be out havin fun at this second

Yuh dog-gone right, KaTz. It's colder than a {being polite} out here too, but at least we're in the 20's most of the time.

I'd just like to go on the record to say that if I had to hole-up in a porta-pooper like you had to do, to escape the icy min-rocks falling from the sky, I'd have done it too. Even if it was a bit stinky-winky.

OK, you guys have GOT to stop posting all these fabulous pictures from your Utah rides!! I want to ride over there so badly I can taste it (or smell it LOL).

I guess I just need to pick a week, put my vacation request in and just do it!

Maybe GG can be my tour guide!

It sure would be great to have a Chief Mechanical Wizard along on our expeditions, Kendo. This year my buddy and I are thinking about a 10-day, all-gear-onboard ride starting up by Heber. Head south to the AZ border through some of the country you see in those pictures, then come back north along a different route.

Of course you'd have to give up your comfy toy hauler and learn to love eating trailside dinners that look like this:

Image

Image

Then again we might be able to kill us a snake or two down in the lower elevations and eat those for a change of pace. I can do a mean sauteed snake dish. :)

You keep posting pics of that stuff and it never gets any better, or any more appealing. And I know it comes out looking pretty much the same too. :puke:

Perhaps I can talk my wife into providing 'chase vehicle' services so I would have a nice comfy place to lay my head at night. :skirtsmilie:

Bahstud. I can only dream about my wife doing something like that for me.

Yeah, I can probably route us around for night stops along roads where she could get your toyhauler in. You sleep cozy/comfy, and we'll curl up under your trailer.

We'll have to do one night in Torrey to make it worth her while. There's a great restaurant right outside of town. Their wild game special is to die for. No decent Tequila, but I'll have the Margaritas covered.
