Trip Report: 5Mile OHV (Utah)

Postby BruteForce » Mon Nov 17, 2008 7:25 pm

I took today off to do some further exploring as far North of 5Mile OHV (SR 73) as I could. While out there, I did a bit of geocaching..

Even though I've ridden this area for years now, I was amazed at some of the new trails I discovered as far back as Mercur Canyon Road, Manning Canyon Road and other locations.

I stumbled on one trail that was clearly above my pay grade. After following this trail for about 30 minutes, it started going down hill at a rapid descent. I figure it was about a 4000 foot elevation drop. The boulders and obstacles mid-trail were getting very large. At about the mid point, I decided it was just too risky to continue down and got my machine to a point where I could winch up to a tree. To my dismay, the winch cable got wrapped around my front/left tire. Fortunately, I never ride without an extra 50' of nylon wrapped winch cable strapped to the rear of the ATV. After a grueling 20 minutes, I finally got turned around and made my way back up.

This trail is located at : N 40 17.106 W 112 12.178 . I highly recommend that if you take this trail, do not proceed further west unless you are a VERY EXPERIENCED RIDER. I placed a lost whip flag on the trail to mark the spot where I turned around and where it becomes far more treacherous.

One more cache hide.

I had a great time out there placing caches on rarely used trails. While out there, I also replaced the container at "Stick it where the Sun Doesn't Shine".

While placing a cache, the alarm started blaring out at the Deseret Chemical Depot (the US's stockpile of Chemical/biological/nuclear weapons). I was able to test the VideoCam function of my new camera.

Somebody with far more courage than I forged this trail. I was riding solo, so didn't want to risk being upside down and trapped.. :P

Definitely a smart move....it sounded like quite a struggle just to turn around.

My next trip out there.....you'll be my guide. :)

Well, I have so many extra sets of BDU's (from my days in the Army). They make excellent attire for ATV'ing and hiking. You can't even notice that you're filthy dirty! :D

Name the date and I'll take you through some Utah terrain riding. My speciality is 90 mile round trips through every conceivable terrain type (sand, snow, rocks, soft dirt) in one loop.

Sounds like a plan....something other than the normal stuff that everyone does in Moab.

Awesome territory there! I would love to see that area someday. Problem is, don't trust my truck on dragging a trailer all the way out there. Gotta get a hitch on the SUV... :-)

Great pix - thanks for sharing!!

Well, I got to 5Mile pass this morning around 0845. The intent was to do a 200 mile round trip from this location to Little Sahara sand dunes. I loaded up the ATV and started to gear up but quickly discovered that I forgot my jacket at home!

Luckily, I had a hoodie sweat shirt in the back of the truck, so I could at least ride around and only freeze "a little". Temperature was just barely 35F. Discovered some awesome canyons and hidden trails about 5 miles south of the staging area.

This is still on my TO-DO list!
