Trip Report: 5Mile OHV (Utah)
I took today off to do some further exploring as far North of 5Mile OHV (SR 73) as I could. While out there, I did a bit of geocaching..
Even though I've ridden this area for years now, I was amazed at some of the new trails I discovered as far back as Mercur Canyon Road, Manning Canyon Road and other locations.
I stumbled on one trail that was clearly above my pay grade. After following this trail for about 30 minutes, it started going down hill at a rapid descent. I figure it was about a 4000 foot elevation drop. The boulders and obstacles mid-trail were getting very large. At about the mid point, I decided it was just too risky to continue down and got my machine to a point where I could winch up to a tree. To my dismay, the winch cable got wrapped around my front/left tire. Fortunately, I never ride without an extra 50' of nylon wrapped winch cable strapped to the rear of the ATV. After a grueling 20 minutes, I finally got turned around and made my way back up.
This trail is located at : N 40 17.106 W 112 12.178 . I highly recommend that if you take this trail, do not proceed further west unless you are a VERY EXPERIENCED RIDER. I placed a lost whip flag on the trail to mark the spot where I turned around and where it becomes far more treacherous.

Yet another cache hide
One more cache hide.
I had a great time out there placing caches on rarely used trails. While out there, I also replaced the container at "Stick it where the Sun Doesn't Shine".
While placing a cache, the alarm started blaring out at the Deseret Chemical Depot (the US's stockpile of Chemical/biological/nuclear weapons). I was able to test the VideoCam function of my new camera.

Definitely a smart move....it sounded like quite a struggle just to turn around.
My next trip out there.....you'll be my guide.

Sounds like a plan....something other than the normal stuff that everyone does in Moab.

Well, I got to 5Mile pass this morning around 0845. The intent was to do a 200 mile round trip from this location to Little Sahara sand dunes. I loaded up the ATV and started to gear up but quickly discovered that I forgot my jacket at home!
Luckily, I had a hoodie sweat shirt in the back of the truck, so I could at least ride around and only freeze "a little". Temperature was just barely 35F. Discovered some awesome canyons and hidden trails about 5 miles south of the staging area.
This is still on my TO-DO list!
