One more shot at FR-19
Decided to take a shot at getting up on top of FR-19 again, since the southwest facing slopes have lost a lot of snow. Lots of debris around up there along the road, and a crew was finishing fixing some electric lines downed by a tree right at the end of the paved road. It looked like it had been mighty windy up there!
Lake Valley Reservoir was pretty choppy.
The rocks on the shore are covered with ice.
I got about 6 miles up and really bogged down. Someone's been up there with tracks, but it didn't help me at all. Guess that's what I need!
Sooo, had to turn around and go down.
FR-38 was the same way and I didn't want to go downhill and not be able to get back up... Back at the intersection, the sign looks pretty tired of being up there.
The lower part is an ice rink.
At least one nice vista - Red Mountain/Signal Peak.
That was about it...
On the way back, I came down Rollins Lake Road to see how low the lake is. It's pretty far down, and when it gets a fair way down, you can see the old Lincoln Highway (later US 40).
There's an old camp or auto court that's visible when the lake is down, so I walked over to take a look. Construction on the lake started in 1963, so these were displaced at that time or before.

Cool, you were able to ride in the month of December with no tracks!
I checked my logs and I've still never done a December ride. It was 7 degrees out when I got up this morning so I'm in no hurry to break that streak.

16 whole miles... :-/ Nice to be out though. Warmer than your spot - about 40 degrees out in the afternoon. From home it looks so melted off, but the north sides have plenty of junk to slog through.GrizzlyGuy wrote:Cool, you were able to ride in the month of December with no tracks!
Many are open to non-wheeled vehicles during the winter - but FR-19 does have the typical broken gate along the way. I was hoping all the melting might have done a better job on the north side where the road goes, but it's just made the snow into thick crud. Oh well!EigerMike wrote:very nice dave ! glad you got out that snow does look real icey.heck i thought all the roads are closed up there in the winter? thanks for sharing
I think I'd use a set of tracks more than a sled - but I would really have to ride with someone in winter time for safety sake...

ROFL...PUSSY.
You would have LOVED last weekend snow camping....MASSIVE fire...we burned 3 whole trees...once was about 24". Then, they filled a bacardi bottle with gasoline....she blew 100 feet in the air. THAT"S winter camping!!
