Mt. Fillmore Ride 14 Jul 13

Postby silvertip » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:49 am

Three of us did a ride out of Eureka Diggings over to Mt Fillmore. Nice country. I grow up on a mine in that area. Most of this ride was very eazy road riding. I don't think many peep ride up there. We did almost 55 miles and lots of stops to view the country. I talked to a USFS OHV LEO the other day and he told me that the Clarks Canyon/Rattlesnake Cr. trail in this area was one of the tuff's one in the Tahoe and I've done it. Made me feel good for an OLD MAN!!!

That's a great area! I usually ride it from the other direction, starting over at Plumas Pines near Graeagle and riding west to La Porte and points in between. Or, start and Downieville and head north into the same area.

I have that Clarks Canyon/Rattlesnake Cr. trail marked as Expert Only on my maps. I haven't been on it, seemed like the approach was washed out or closed(?) when I checked it out several years ago.

Another trail that I need to finish is the one that runs around the west side of Mt. Fillmore. Last summer Flyin Boy and I were on our way back from an overnight ride to LaPorte and started up it from the west end. We hit some big rocks at 10M06ROCKS in the map below, looked like more rocks to follow, it was late, and we figured we might end up riding in the dark if we kept going. We turned around and headed north on the one that crosses Slate Creek where you took that last picture of the RZR going down into it, but there was a buggy hung up in the gulch crossings at GULCHXINGS on my map. We helped him get winched out and finally made it back to Plumas Pines at around sunset.

The blue road I show going around the east side of Mt. Fillmore is an easy one, we would have taken that to save time, but a few years ago the landowners started locking the two gates on it.

Anyhoo, there is a ton of fun stuff in that area, not sure why people don't ride it more often!

GrizzlyGuy
We did go around the Blue Rd on your map. And with a new guy in the RZR so we didn't go the 10M06ROCKS trail. I've done your 10M06ROCKS three time and it has a lot of big rock in it.
I agree thier are lots of way to get in there. I did a 80 miler out of Johnsville around Fillmore down Nelson Cr. and back by the River to Johnsville. That was a fun ride. And out of La Porta also.

Amazing looking area - have to do that sometime too! (so many places...) The Sierra is known as "a geologist's nightmare" - truly it is with all the different kinds of rock, overlaid with the volcanics. Definitely my favorite mountain range! (so I'm a little biased...)

Great pix - what kind of camera are you using?

This is off of the Mt Fillmore Quad Map
942 Is the Y to the right off of the OHV Rd/trail to Poker Flat from Downieville.
943 is the end of the FS Rd. keep going striate here
944 Turn to the right off the Chimney Rock trail that turns in a dirt bike trail. This trail from here down is loose and rocky.
945 From here on down it gets really good.

Enjoy and we need Pic.

Nice maps Silvertip, that's the one that Flyin Boy and I did part of in Aug 2009 (found my track logs) when we camped at Poker Flat. We only made it to the northeast side of Bunker Hill. There was a slide, trail was narrow and off-camber with a pretty steep slope to the left that you'd surely roll down if you farked up.

Flyin Boy put one of my Grizzlies on its side in Utah back in 2005 on a trail section that was much less off-camber, so he didn't want any part of it. I'm no fan of off-camber myself, so I was happy to turn back too.

You're a mad dog to have ridden it all the way. Next time you're out there please take some pictures, or maybe one of you other more adventurous Obsession-ers can do it (Kendo? Yeah let's get Kendo, he'll ride anything). That's the only way I'll ever see the rest of the trail!
