Help on how to install

Postby Keith Strong » Wed Dec 19, 2007 6:22 am

So I got the new improved Kolpin gas tank  I got this one for the mounts, but I am not sure I like the new spout.

Anyway, how would you guys solve this mounting problem? I was thinking a full cover for the rack with lexan? Or maybe even sheet metal, but I wasnt sure that would be strong enough. I am looking for lightweght and ease of instalation. Problem is I havent bought a welder, so burning in a couple straps isnt as easy for me right now.

Kendo? Volunteer a little shop time for a 6 pack? I still need/want to discuss that thing I left you the VM on too ;) Just been too busy to call you back.

Looks like it might fit on a Polaris rack better
You might want to put some sheet aluminum on the rack to fill one of the webs so you can mount those holders.

Interesting dilemma. Looks like a couple small pieces of sheet steel or aluminum on either side would be your best bet. Straps of flat steel would work too, just depends on what would provide the most functionality.

I should be around the next couple of weekends, except for a ride over New Year's weekend.

Yeah...I'm glad I have 3 of the old style. Be interesting to see if the old spouts, fit the new ones.

Use some of the small ratchet straps or find someone with a welder.

I think a couple of pcs of 18 or 16 ga sheetmetal will do the trick. the rack tubing is pretty thin wall stuff, will have to be careful with the welder. If you make it to Oroville some time I could weld it for you. I have a sheer and a brake so we can cut and bend as needed. I am headed to Az for a coulpe of weeks, so we can get together if you want when I get back. just let me know

Thanks guys. At this point I am undecided on which route I will take. Easy route is to burn in a strap like this:

3 bolts would hold it fine. Course the other route would be a piece of aluminum or sheet metal and make the rack solid. You think expanded steel would be too cheesy?

I'd go with aluminum and bolt it...that gas is heavy. About 22 pounds when full. It adds up.

I heard of a guy who welded on brackets and was then able to slide the Kolpin in and out, even with a hard box on top of all this. See here and the post that follows that one.

What happens when the sun shines and the vapors cause the gas pack to swell?

It only swells a little. Its mostly full of fuel with very little air space. When I notice the pressure changes in tank is when I fill it before I leave then head to the mountain or vise versa.

I've had mine get at least 1" thicker in the sun, and that wasn't on a real hot day. I always fill it as full as possible to avoid vapor space, when I've left space the problem is worse. I've seen how much the swell, the bracket would need to leave space for expansion or it would be near impossible to get out once it expanded.
