Winch Extensions?

Postby GrizzlyGuy » Mon May 05, 2008 8:18 pm

Somewhere out there in ATVObsession land, you guys were talking about a cord/rope/strap thingy to extend the reach of your winch. My search engine skills have failed me and I can't find it. Anyone got a pointer or tip?

Situation: You're riding along, see a big hunk of snow out ahead, and you decide to go all-in on the gas. 150' later... you're dug in, you're alone, and you need to pull yourself backwards to terra-firma.

I'm thinking I would yank myself sideways to a convenient tree to turn the Grizzly, then use the 200-ish foot winch extension cord/rope/strap/whatever... to pull myself back out the way I went in.

No? Better ideas?

Took me about 2 minutes. :P

Kinda pricey but lightweight for sure. It would cost you 4 bones to have 200 feet worth. I can see a 50 foot extension, and just be a little careful about where you throttle in to.

Perhaps an anchor point in addition?

Thanks Kendo, I have that same 50' extension in my rear bag. Yup, I guess I could get a few more and chain those together with clevises or maybe even carabiners as needed.

I was actually thinking of a conversation on here where someone had come up with clever ideas for extensions that weren't designed to be extensions. Some kind of flat strap they had picked up somewhere, maybe a couple hundred feet long, said it was super-handy. I wish I could remember the thread or who said that. I searched the forum and couldn't turn it up. Hopefully whoever that was will wander by here and point me at it.

Yeah D2, I'd love NOT to be that guy. Haven't been that guy yet. But there's always a first time you have that brain fart, I figure. Brain farts are real common with me.

Steve Jackson carries 200 Feet and 100 Feet with him. He's prepared.

Honestely...if EVERYONE has 50 Feet....you now have a LOT. However...if you ride alone.....I would have a lot more than 100 feet total....although I personally would do any snow riding without a buddy....it's a lot of work and can be dangerous without a partner.

And in Ken's case, what he neglected to mention - someone to snuggle with when you have to spend the night.

Uh-oh, maybe I've got the triple-whammy: I sometimes ride alone, through snow country, while hamming it up for the video camera. In that one, I lucked out and got stuck coming back down (had crashed the same drift going up) so it was an easy extraction for Mr. Winch. :)

Weird coincidence: I woke up today determined to go riding. Was thinking of heading over to the low elevation part of Sagehen Hills, where some of that video was shot. My wife even agreed to video me making my "snow dash" to get around to the front of the house.

But on my way out to grab my helmet (could roll off the chunk-o-snow during dash across it), my neighbor comes down his driveway on his dirt bike. He said he had just been over there 2 days ago, couldn't even turn onto the trail because of all the snow. :crybaby:

Oh well, more time for planning. Sounds like I need to toss a few steel carabiners in the rear bag for joining ropes. Maybe check out parachute bridle for a long strap that should be easy to roll up and carry.

Grizzleyguy,
I read somewhere that ome folks were using some white wbbing type stuff. I have some but only short pieces. I believe it was used for pulling under ground wires and cables. It seems to be pretty strong. If you know any body that works with under ground wire, you may beable to get as much as needed for fre. I will do some checking and test the little bit that I have for strwngth. Will get back to you all.
I carry several lengths of small winch line and clevises. Can reach about 150' including winch.

150 ft is pretty good.

I remember after this weekend.....Terry, Jack and I all bought 50Ft. We barely made this tree...the ONLY tree barely able to hold a winch cable. 50 Ft + 15 + 15 + 15 and we had about 3-5 ft of slack.

Thanks Keith, that sounds like what I was thinking of! Some kind of strap stuff that wasn't meant for winching, but could work. If phone companies or someone like that is just tossing it out after pulling a few cables, I'll bet the price would be low and friendly. :-)

I've found various 2" wide straps meant for winching larger vehicles, but that seems like overkill for us. And I have no intention of using this strap to pull myself up a cliff. Ken's picture/story is pretty much exactly what I was thinking about: you're in snow, probably not a lot of slope, else you wouldn't have made it that far in the first place. You need a bit more reach, and even if the thing snaps... you aren't going to be dead. 8)

LOL! Yeah, but if I had a couple of wenches like that with me, I'd probably be inclined to ride a lot less. :(

Edit: Or at least THAT kind of riding. Aw heck, you know what I meant, right?
