Seems to work but I'd rather not be dependent on the engine and brakes to control the vehicle in a winching scenario. One time in band camp, I mean in Moab,I witnessed fuel pouring out of a red Polaris quad and the operator bailed pretty quick. Imagine what the quad would do without someone running the throttle or brakes. At least with a winch the vehicle stays put while you run for an extinguisher

I had to winch today so I could tip my quad back over... it was needing to be rolled UP HILL. Something I couldn't do alone, and it was over on its side enough that it was getting NO fuel and I wouldn't want to run it upside down anyway... Good`ol Warn skid me to a flatter spot and I pushed it over slightly up hill still
