500 04.5 Dying

Postby Ken » Wed Jan 10, 2007 11:48 am

Hey...Steve from Montana Jacks' son..has an 04.5 500. He had a problem last year where the quad would start...run and then die. repeatedly....

They checked...and it wasn't fuel...it was spark.....would that be a circuit breaker? or a Pod....the battery light was flashing.

There is a Service Bulletin and not a recall for the ECM module around this year. It would act the same way.( I'll look and see if I can find it or at least call your dealer with the vin number)
04.5 had the spark plug wire shorting out on the frame under the gas tank also but, flashing pod will not happen with just the spark plug wire shorting out.

I had both of those problems with my 04.5 500 and the plug wire had to be replaced, and the CDI had to be replaced, both covered as recal work. My wife also had the cdi in her 04.5 400 replaced also under recal. Your dealer will know from the vin number on the machine if you were given a bad CDI and it is a free replacement when it does eventually go bad. I never actually had the pod flashing like you described, my 500 was making the 4x4 kick on all the time, dealer tested the CDI box and said it had some problems, put in a new one, 3 of them actually until we found a new one that was good, and it never happened again. My wifes just up and died all together, no power to nothing, I swaped her cdi with mine and she was running and I was dead, so I got her a new CDI also.
