Sportsman Oil Change...

Postby ToddW » Sat Mar 10, 2007 10:48 am

Do you guys use the "Kits" from Polaris or do you buy other 0w40 oil and use the Polaris filter or what?

I'd prefer to just pickup some Mobil1 and save some $$ but I'm not sure if it affects the warranty or if the Polaris branded is really better?

For my first change I ended up just getting the "polaris oil change kit" but for hte future I'd like to save some money if possible.

I think in the future I'll be running 15w50 Mobil1 for cost and because we don't even see -40* in the snow here ;) Or 10w40 whichever I can find from Mobil1 at WallyWorld cheapy :)

This is what I was told to use on mine. It has all the proper additives for our bikes. I've never seen it at walmart, but I don't usually go there.

Cool, the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 sounds interesting... but I really wonder what the cost is on this vs. the Mobil1 15w50 you can get at wal-mart.. I;d imagine this V-Twin "SPECIAL" stuff is pretty $$$.

I also wonder if the V-Twin 20w-50 is that much "betteR" than the 15w-50 for probably 1/2 the price...

I don't know about you guys but I probably will end up changing the fluid ~4 times a year just because I really feel I abuse my toys. And at that # of changes I wonder if the 15w-50 is that much "WORSE". HMMMM

I read the manual they say any synthetic 0w-40 works, and since I wont see any -40* 10w-40 or 15w-50 (probably getting a little thin?) should work fine.

I know it does not get that cold but, I always use 0-40 syn. Polaris, Mobil 1, and now Amsoil when I do my next change.
Filters, I only use Wix or Polaris

I only use WIX or Polaris filters.

And 0W-40W is the recommended weight...whether it be Polaris, Amsoil or whatever.

Using 0w for anything where we live and drive (even in the snow here) isn't needed. I think the ONLY REASON they suggest that is it's a HUGE RANGE so that it works in North Dakota as well as California. Probably a Polaris liability issue and they don't want to make the "consumer" think to much about what oil to put in.

We simply don't have a need for 0w here.

Anyway... where are you guys getting your filters from and how much are you paying each?

I was told once that thinner weight oil had smaller molecules and would flow easier into tighter tolerance areas. That is why you should use the thinnest weight recommended for your temp. range. If that makes any sense. Just what I was told. I don't know how true it is. But I have always stuck to it with good results.

I think a biggest reason to use the suggested 0w-40 is that when riding if for some ODD reason you need oil it will be what most people have, as it's not good at all to mix multi-weight oil.

I buy all my stuff from Amsoil now. I don't remember how much...I just bought 'em and I got enough for 4 changes.

I'm sure the range is for the colder climates...but zero isn't going to hurt you. The faster you get oil moving...the better. Those engines warm pretty fast, so I imagine it isn't "0" for long.

I snagged some 0w-40 mobil1 from wal-mart for $5.97/qt.

I did notice it doesn't say "SH" on it... does anyone know where I can find if the letters on it mean it's of "higher grade" than SH or what exaclty that means?

Thanks
-Todd
