04 Fuel Gauge

Postby Kendo » Wed May 02, 2007 8:47 pm

So it's been bugging me. During my teardown to change the plugs, I found a loose wire, with weatherpack connector on the end. Could this be the future fuel gauge wire??

Long story short - yes it is!!

I was cruising eBay the other day and low and behold, I find a guy selling a sending unit for a Sportsman 700 - for $25!!! I bought it.

Tonight, I pulled the wire, hooked her up and what do you know - it works!! So now I just need to drill a hole in the tank and put this thing in. Might have to do an "impression" where it mounts, but I have an idea for that too.

Sure, might sound like a PITA for something that is so-so accurate, but I am anal enough that I just have to have everything work that can/should.

Cost me all of $32.

Plastic tank - no worries!!

The scary part will be using the heat gun to make the impression if I decide that's really necessary.

I need to take a closer look, but I do know the 04.5 has an impression in the tank up front to accomodate the sending unit. Not sure if that's for clearance, or for operation of the sending unit itself. Just need to take a look at it.

I'll try to shoot some pics as I do it, might be an interesting tech piece for those of us in the "half-ass" part of the 04 model year.

It's just a little bit of gasoline, no biggie!! Once you get past the initial flash, it's all good and under control. It's just those damn vapors that getcha, if you don't get them quick enough, they spread like mad!!

So, you are wanting video of this I suppose. "America's Biggest Idiots" - maybe we'll get a cash prize! LOL
