For a full size Sportsman, 400 just isn't enough. I think you would be very disappointed.

That one looks like it has a broken rear rack too, look at the pic from the rear and the left side of the rear rack. Looks like it goes downward slightly to me.

I think the 500 is the one you want, it's the best compromise of power and fuel economy. The big bores will ccertainly out do it in the power dept, but at the expense of about 25% greater fuel consumption.

Case in point - my 700 can do about 50-70 miles per tank depending on conditions, it is carb'd. Wendy's 500 can easily do 100 miles in the same conditions, it is EFI. Ken's 800 does about 75-80 miles and it's EFI. Wendy can keep up with and pass me on straightaways (rider weight difference + EFI) but I can feel the seat of the pants difference in torque between mine and hers.

Maybe Bill can enlighten us on his mileage with the carb'd 500.

If at all possible, no matter what you get, I would look for EFI. It's just a better system all around.

i am looking far and wide i seen that one and never really herd of a full size like that with a 400 class engine i didn't know if would be under powered i have only ridden a 800 efi witch had plenty of power

but the 800 and 700 are up in the 6k range i want to pay cash and be free and clear.

i only work weekands at the moment so i am open to a drive to reno tahoe or the bay area.

I know it might be a touch more than you want to spend, but this is a good deal. Most likely EFI too.

Kendo is right, look for an EFI and The X had a 400 and it is no way close to a 500HO but, torque is good top speed you will have to hang on for a short time to get there.
Mileage? I would say I'm just short of Ken's 800EFI and a head of Kendo's 700 Carb. With mileage even with the extra 25 gallons I bring.
Never really tracked it.
It seems that I need gas when the EFI units need gas.
Non EFI 4.5 gallons, EFI units 4.125gallons

About halfway between Marysville and Grass Valley off Hwy 20. You turn at Penn Valley and go north, probably about 10-15 miles or so.

EDIT: Or it could be the one down by Mono Lake. I forgot there are two, which is quite puzzling to me, two cities with the same name in the same state??
