polaris hawkeye/sportsman 400

Postby roon101 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 11:04 am

ok my wifey wants a 4x4 witch is music to my ears
any way i can't decide on what would be the best one to get

i like the yamaha low center of gravity but even used ones are over 4k.
ok heres is why i don't get her just a standard sportsman she is only 4"9 tall so i half to keep that in mind.

iam going back and foruth about the hawkeyes and the 350--400 yamaha's my rancher was just a tad to large for her to be comterble

so any advice on the hawkeyes would be great i know ken has one but i would like to know the ups and downs of them as much as possible.
ihave found brand new hawkeye's for 3100 to 3650 in price. is there a fair price

Well, I had one, now Ken has it. It's the 300 but the frame is the same on the 400's. Size wise, they are great. Many times it will go right thru something the fatter Sportsman has to work at. The 300 is light on power, and the carb can have issues at altitude, but there is a remedy - it's called a half inch drill bit. I believe it was 4-6 holes in the air box combined with a Dynojet kit and it runs fine now.

For your wifes size, it would be a good fit, and the extra power of the 400 would probably be a huge improvement.

One downside, the suspension is a bit harsh. I don't know if it just needs more break in time or what, but it is significantly rougher than the Sportsman.

You might want to talk to Ken, I think he is considering selling the Hawkeye since Kenan is bigger now......

My Dad has a 300 and our experiences have mirrored Kendo's. With some adjustment in the rear the suspension is improved. We placed a set of 25" tires on Dads machie and it made a dramatic difference in the ride. One thing to make sure is the dealer gets the jetting and clutching set up properly becasue it is criticle with the smaller 300(279) engine. Once we had those issues corrected it has been one solid machine. Dad uses his mostly to hunt, work around the place, plow snow and tow the grandkids around.

My wife is 5'2" and around 125lb and it fits her very well. If she decided to ride more I would buy her one in the 400 size as my first choice. They are compact, easy to ride and a very reliable machine.
