Oil Type and Weight

Postby Wildhorse800 » Mon Sep 07, 2009 4:56 pm

I was thinking about switching to a different oil, but no one really makes 2W synthetic. Anyone still use the 0W? I was afraid this may cause a pressure issue and send the warning light on.

Since the Polaris stuff is reasonably priced and includes the filter, I just stick with it.

The one time on my SP800 that I switched to another oil, my gas mileage dropped like a rock. Soon as I switched back, it returned.

Mine just hit over 600 miles and it seems to have eaten some which i hope is just normal seating of the rings. Iwanted to get something in like a 5 quart container. Guess I'll just settle for an extra quart of "PoPoil".

I think that's normal for the 800. Actually I think most of it is coming out of the breather tube. I've always found a film of oil (more like dirt) around the end of the crankcase vent tube, which ultimately ends up on the motor. I clean it off, it comes back, etc. I just check the oil before every ride to be sure. Heck even my Grizzly does this.

There's a special crankcrase check valve thing you can get... a guy on PolarisRiders.com told me about it. The Outlaw/Predator people use it, but from reading about it, I think it'll work on anything. It goes into that line and helps prevent this sort of thing, and also is a check-valve so you can't suck dust or water into that line. Downside is it's $75, so I haven't rushed out to get one yet.

I think I'll keep my $75 and clean it every now and again...

I believe Amsoil has a "Powersports" oil that is 0W-40, but probably isn't any cheaper.

I have been using Castrol Syntec 5W-50 in my wife's 500 and it seems to be fine. I think the 0 is mainly for those that live and use their stuff in cold climates. Coldest it ever really gets around here is maybe 20 degrees. 5 weight is still plenty viscous at that temp. I am actually more concerned about the upper threshold with the high temps we experience.
