A benz Diesel without a knock..... lol. That's like one day seeing all the planets alligned or watching CA slide into the ocean. Never gonna happen.... roflmao

The knock in the Polaris is inherent to it's design.... Mine does it. So do most if not all other 500 and 700's..... Some just louder than others.

So, if the noise is such a concern and you "think" it will effect the reliability down the road, take it in.... however keep in mind, you just might be causing more problems than your resolving....

Personally, I think peoples reaction to the knock issue is a bit over rated. I'll put my klucking, knocking, noisy Polaris 700 against anything out there and know I'll make it home.

Dude, no one said anything about diesels and the knock is nothing like diesel knock. It is a metal on metal knock that dimninishes as oil pressure increases.

It appears that you are willing to accept "second best" but When I purchase something new, I expect it to operate correctly. As far as taking it in, I took it in and was told not to worry about it. I then asked for a 5 year extended warranty on the engine and was told no way.

It is unfortuante that people such as yourself who will unquestioningly accept second best allows the manufacturers to beleive that they can market products that are not quite up to the quality level of the industry standards.

It also seems that Polaris is banking on their superior 4 wheel drive and suspension systems to allow them to include an engine which is not quite up to the quality level of the Jap or Rotax competition.

Just for the record, Polaris' engines are built by Fuji Heavy Industries, aka Subaru.

There's nothing "1947" about it. It's a Quad...you want silence...buy a Lexus.

I am expectant that a brand new engine will not to have an oil pressure related knock. How bad does the engine knock in your Jeep and did it when it was new?

Fuji in Japan may manufacture the engines but they are making them for an offshore (to them) client who accepts knocking noises. Quads where the corporate profits go to Jap companies (Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki) do not seem to have this problem. Does your Grizzly have an internal engine knock? None of my on road and off road products, past and present, from the aforementioned manufacturers have had any.

My take on this knocking situation is this... I don't think it's normal, and based on what I know about Polaris and how they stand behind their products, once that a knock is confirmed, they WILL stand behind every motor, very probably even after warranty is up.

Case in point... their 2001-2003 (?) 800cc snowmobile motors have a tendency to lose their crankshaft at random intervals. My dealer has told me that Polaris is honoring warranty on them even after the warranty is up. Doesn't matter how old the sled is. That says a lot.

Not denying the engine knock....I have no idea what a single sounds like, so no idea what's normal.

I'm just talking about Quad suspension/frame/whatever noise.

The 500's are made by Fuji, but the twins are USA, from what I've been told.
What about the fuel pump problem, is no one worried about this, if and when it goes from overheating and fuel starvation your out of luck, most of us could pull a broken down quad home, but from the pics on this website in the rock section, if it breaks down looks like it will be staying there. Has no one also had there starters locking up yet, with NO back up your in trouble again.
1200 miles is nothing, my buddie's blew at 2400 miles and that's nothing, when I get to 10.000 miles I'll be impressed.

I think what Ken was saying was 1200 miles times seven quads.... and those 1200 miles "are" something. I'd also bet those 1200 miles are harder miles than anyone I know (and probably you know) put on their quads. You can't compare fireroad miles to rock miles....

Also, if one of us broke down and had to be towed, we "would" get it home. :D

Likewise, the miles on my Grizzly are pretty hard miles. And you're right, if we get stuck, we WILL get it out come hell or high water (snow?). Worst-case, hire a helicopter... costs about $700. Snowmobilers have to do it a lot if they have a bad tree encounter out in BFE.

Still, the point isn't lost that starter and fuel pump problems might be an issue. I will be paying very close attention to this between now and when I make my purchase.

The Fuji motors are manufactured in the USA.
All the parts are most likely boxed and shipping from Japan.
1994 Sept. Incorporates ROBIN Manufacturing(FUJI IND. MOTORS) U.S.A., a production arm in the U.S.A. as a joint venture with Polaris.
