Oil Level Consistency

Postby Wildhorse800 » Wed Oct 21, 2009 1:42 pm

Need an idea of where your oil levels usually are.

I try and keep mine right in the middle, but after each ride, it is right at the add/safe mark, higher on the back.

Just wondering if it is acting like alot of diesels where it will just burn off oil to a certan point. I have yet to see it below this mark as i try and keep it at a safe level at all times. I'm afraid if I go out where it is, it will drop to an unsafe level and...well...BOOM!

Depending on responses, I amy have to take it to the stealership for warranty work.

This is on the 800.

Closing in on 900 miles, @ 50 miles. Stock filter and oil. Intake breather is relatively clean. No sign of oil being sucked up.

All the basic probable causes have been covered. No smoke...no leaks.

I know if its not leaking it, it HAS to be using it. Just don't ever recall it smoking and if it was, I am sure my wife or brother, who are usually behind me, would have said something.

I just need to know where your level usually sits on the stick.

You should not be using oil..........

I ask the question about the K&n air filter because there has been some problems with the air not being filtered corectly.......allowing dirt/dust into your engine.......this will cause oil consumption.

K&N has added more gauze/filter material because of this problem.

You do not have to see smoke comming from your quad to be using oil.

It was doing it while the stock filter was being used to start with. Besides, the oil would have to be sucked up through the breather hose, into the air box and onto the filter. There are no signs of any oil in the air box OR on the pre-cleaner on the air filter.

Magic oil?

Now you see it and voila! now you don't! :?

Did K&N do an upgrade?
Yes.....According to the mecchanic at Chico cycles Yam/kaw/ktm.

I also spoke with Gray the owner of Glende polaris and he said they had a problem with people using K&N filters on the larger displacment machines (dust getting past the filter) no problem on the 500's and smaller.

I still think the K&N fiasco is nothing more than passing the buck. There is no way the stock filters are better at filtering. Besides having the filter material, the oil catches and holds dust better than a dry element filter.

Because these are usually the first immediate upgrades done, the blame is going to them.

Anyways, so I am assuming that everyone's oil level is staying spot-on.

That's all I really need to know here...and we are only talking about the Polaris twins, specifically the 800s.

K&N is no passing the buck.

I won't use one again on my 800. My intact valve just past the sensor was literally caked with dirt. The 800 sucks hard...is all I can say....too hard for the K&N.

Since I switched to a UNI filter.....the residue was totally minimal after a year.

Still mainly concerned with the oil level.

I'll probabally get one more weekend out of it before taking it to the dealer for answers or repair.

I got less than a month left on the 6 month warranty.

wildhorse800 I think I am answering your question..if your oil level is decreasing the oil is going some where. I do not understand your coment about oil making its way into your air box via your breather hose. if you are loosing oil and you see no leaks it is being burned up and sent out the exhaust. you do not have to see smoke to be burning oil. I would sugest that you remove the K&N filter before you take it to the dealer.

I have a 2005 kaw bruteforce 750 with about 3400 miles on it. It is using small amounts of oil, low on power and the valves need to be ajusted about every 300 miles just so it will start and run. I have had it to the Chico kaw dealer, I was told by the mechanic who was the best man at my wedding 22 plus years ago, that dust had made it's way past the K&N and excelerated the wear of my engine. I have the quad in my garage and the next chance I get I am going to do a compression test. I expect to be doing a valve job and rering at the least..may just do a a complete top end rebuild.

yes you are correct one of the first changes that people make is to there air filter.......my K&N nonair filter is going in the garbage....

Blow-by, which is when compression leaks past the rings into the crankcase. The pressure needs to go somewhere and can force oil up through the breather. On cars and trucks, it also goes into the air cleaner, but they also run a PCV that eliminates the engine crankcase from building pressure.

I appreciate the info, but my original question is for any owner of an 800:

Yes or no? Does your engine use any oil at all?

I never top mine off. It goes between changes w/out needing any.

I am going to check it soon because I`ve pushed it hard last couple weeks, and I`ll report back.

What's the correct part # for the 800? I'd like to upgrade my filter unit.
