Is it easy to repair a SP in the field?

Postby Stumppuller » Thu May 12, 2005 2:39 pm

Just wondering, if someone blows a belt on a 500-600-700-800 Sportsman, is it easy to change in the bush, and how long does it take, do you have to take the fender off or just the side panel.
Is there anything else that can go wrong but be fixed to get you home, any info would be great. I'm still on the fence but trying to determine a few things.
Thanks

I can get to mine in about 4 to 5 minutes.
You just need to get the footwell loose to make room for the clutch cover.

That's good to know that a belt change on a Sportsman is easy. I've done two belt jobs on my Grizzly and while it's not difficult, it's not something that can be changed in the field.

Once you remove the footwell and the crankcase cover, you have to remove an aluminum shield that goes over the primary clutch. Once that's off, you MIGHT be able to spread the sheaves on the secondary and swap the belt, but to be honest, I'm not sure. You might have to pull the primary, which means removing the 24mm nut, which requires either an air gun or a strap wrench.

I just put a new belt on my SP.It was hard to open the sheaves.I just stuck a large size screwdriver in between the sheaves on the secondary clutch and pryed them apart it went off and on easy .I did it by myself ,but it would of been nice to have an xtra pair of hands.

Jack, there should be a hole in the secondary that you can thread a screw into that will spread the sheaves and save you the trouble of prying, and the chance of scarring the sheaves.

Wouldn't a little foreplay before heading straight in with the prybar work better?
