05 500HO won't go over 40mph?

Postby Stumppuller » Tue Aug 16, 2005 5:30 am

Was wondering a buddy of mine has 1 and he hasn't even burned 4 tanks of gas yet, the other day coming back from a trip, he all of a sudden couldn't get over 40mph. When he got home, he shut it off and restarted it a few min. later and took it for a ride down the road and it was fine, dealer wants him to bring it in. Anyone know what could be the problem, I've heard this before and it was Clutch related but can't remember what it was in the clutch.
BTW, will I expect this kind of thing out of my 800 when I get it. I don't want stupid issue's, please tell me NOOOOO!

Thanks

If a restart is curing the problem, it sounds like it's an ECU or spark problem rather than clutching. Should be a fairly easy fix.

FWIW I've never heard of any Polaris having this problem, so this may be a rare one.

Another FWIW, my brake master cyl was bad from the factory... replaced under warranty. Now it's bad again. Guess they got a bad batch of 'em or something. It's still ridable, but the rear brake (from the foot pedal) doesn't work very well.

I'd still rather be riding my 800 than any other ATV.

You know....Steve's 800 rear brake is super mushy...Just thought it needed to be bled.

Not likely it's a bleeding problem (dealer said same thing initially)... I'm betting the MC is bad.

The way I tell on mine (as I posted in the poor brakes thread) is to park it on a slight angle and then use just the rear brake to hold the quad in place. On mine, after 10-15 seconds, the pedal will slowly go to the floorboard and ultimately the machine will start to roll. The first MC was even worse... it'd go to the floor within 5-7 seconds.

Polaris has shitty rear brakes.

95% of the bikes need to be bled within the first 300 miles. The other 5% need new master cylinders.

After you've had that done they still don't work worth a damn.
I'm in the process of trying a new master other than the factory one. My bet is in 06 we'll see a new master cylinder and maybe a brake on both wheels.

Here in Montana, I've seen more quads with windshields than not. Drives me nuts. Lots more have mirrors, but there's a reason for that -- STREET LEGAL! I even put a mirror on mine because I'm taking it over next week to get registered and pick up my plate.

At least my mirror is easily removed -- which I do once I'm off the main road, since last time I was out, I nearly took the thing off on a tree, since the one I got mounts to the side of the handlebars.

A couple weeks ago, I was about to turn right into the business complex where my office is, and coming up the road towards me is a green Rincon, right up the road with traffic following. He hops into the turn lane and turns into the same complex I'm headed for.
