bogged down 700

Postby regor54 » Mon Feb 06, 2006 8:32 pm

One of my riding buddies has an 05 700 sportsman. He took it through some water this weekend. Since then he looses power at about 4000 rpm. It just won't run past that. If you take off real easy, it runs ok, but if you hit it, it just bogs down. Anybody experience this?

Water in the carb? in the oil? or.... like I had water/mud where the belt is..... There is a red plug. Pull the plug and drain all the junk..... Actually, I took a hose and flushed it out.

Sound like it could be water in the carb....water in the filter....whatever it is...it's choking the engine of either fuel or air when it wants it.

Does it feel like the belt slips at higher RPM? or... kinda just chugs along very slow at higher RPM?

Sure sounds like mine, minus the water splash, when the connection to the T-BAP sensor goes bad...

You guys are mentioning carb...is this machine carbed or injected?

It's a carbed bike. He drained the fuel bowl, no evidence of water. He checked the air filter, no water. It's not a belt slip, it just bogs. I suggested checking all the eletrical connections. No luck yet. Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you run it without any filter?

With a carb it doesn't have to have water still in the bowl to cause a problem. If it got water (more likely mud) in the carb it will be the dirt/grit causing the problem. Dirt can partially plug a jet letting some fuel through but not enought to run at higher rpm.

That said it could be an ignition problem also... good luck

I would treat it for water in the fuel, get a bottle of the water in fuel stuff and run it through the tank. Also chech the plug wires for any moisture. I doubt it is the plug wires though, that should cause a problem all of the time.
