This is one adjustment you need to know how to do your self. Easy to do and should be in the owners manual. It will perhaps need to be done two more times before the cable and cable ends take a final set in there location (housing and ends). I had to adjust mine about three times and the wife's four times and now no more troubles.rangertom wrote:UPDATE!!! Bill had it right, it was the ETC/TPS...whatever, it was the damned cable adjustment for the throttle. The retaining nut wasn't tight, allowing the adjuster part to back off from vibration. This explains it's steady worsening. Nice and simple...and the dealership didn't charge for their 5 minute fix either.
Great ending! Thank goodness! I was really afraid it was what some are experiencing who've posted to the atvconnection website.
The father-in-law's happy as a clam...once again!
Thanks again for all the input!
ECT = electronic throttle control. This will stop the power to spark plug if the throttle cable sticks. Some time ago Polaris had a case of stuck throttles and hurt or even perhaps killed someone. So this is the fix for that.

That explains the history! I think the reason I didn't look at this before taking it into the dealer was pure laziness...if this was my machine, I might have done some minor investigation, maybe not...hard tellin. I had them show me like I had no idea what they were talking about, so they did. It's odd I never had that problem w/my 700, bro-in-law's 700, magnum 330, or my wife's magnum 330. Oh well.
Thanks for the history lesson on the reason for the ETC! We were wondering why this was an electronic part. Now we know.

Still F'ed UP!!!
OK,
Bill, it wasn't the "ECT = electronic throttle control"
The Friggin' thing started doing it again. I thought it was fixed, but this weekend, Sunday, we went on a long family ride (40 miles). After about 10 miles, the damned thing started doing it again. I thought I'd adjust the ETC cable...first direction didn't work, made it tighter, didn't work. I left the machine running for the third try, effectively raising the idle to about 1500 RPM. Damned thing kept doing it. I even tried to adjust it to where the manual says to put it, to give the proper amount of play at the thumb throttle. NO JOY!!!
A guy on atvconnection "redmtn" is taking his cancerous 06 500 EFI w/ 90 miles and 100 hours to court over this stalling issue. He's got an interesting story.

a short search for this guy, you'll find the background explained in depth.
Chadd? Any new news?
I'm taking my father-in-law's into the dealer tomorrow.

Do your gauges shut off when it stalls or does it just stall
.
If your gauges remain on, try hooking up a fuel pressure gauge up to it, it might be the fuel pump shutting off.
If all the display lights on the speedo. are going dead it might be a bad kill switch, its like you turned the key off.

Good point...fuel pump. I'll mention that possibility to the dealer. I kinda doubt they'll be able to get it to happen, but we'll see. I'm curious though, how can this pump be checked out when it only does the stalling when it's being used. Got any idea there? I'm not sure how to implement that check. Of course everyone knows the worst problem is one that's intermittent and electrical. If it's not something like a loose wire causing the problem, it's nearly impossible to troubleshoot w/out just grippin' and rippin' parts until the desired effect is reached.
We'll see.
Hey Chadd, if this can't be fixed, what do you suppose a reputable dealer "should" do for the customer?
