Top of rear tires pitch in???

Postby Franco » Thu Apr 20, 2006 8:21 pm

Hey guys....This site gets better and better, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Now for the question... I have a 2004.5 700 EFI (that has been great to me) but the rear wheels pitch in??? I do weigh a slender 290lbs but it just started and I have about 500 miles on her. What do you guys think? My buddy (also similar in stature) has the same problem and has changed every rear bushing he can but to no avail. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Franco

ps any chance on getting some info. on the price and availability of the new footwell protectors??? I am on my second footwell on the right and I cracked oit the first ride out!!!!!!!!!! That HURT!!!

Get behind the quad and look at the tires and wheels with the quad unloaded. Then have your friend get on it and watch how the rear suspension works. Does the camber change as the quad compresses and rebounds? You should see the top of the tire lean in more when compressed and go back to a straight up position when it rebounds, normal operation with the IRS. If you are seeing something else then you may have a problem,

Sounds like the lower/outer A arm bushings.
Ken just have this problem.
Check the bolts to see if there are tight.
I don't rember what ken needed to do.

For the actual footwells.... http://www.precision-aircraft.net/parts.htm

They have other parts there as well all at good prices. I know a couple people that have ordered from them without any problems.

They are out of 02 thru 04 foot wells. Check Ebay.

When I lift the rear up by the bumber the tires sit nice and straight but when I or a friend get on they do pitch in (positive camber) but it is excessive looking when going down the trail. I have followed other Sportsmans without seeing the same wheel/tire pitch inward. I thought it may be bushing too but my buddy with the same problem changed them all in the rear and he still has the problem. My thought was possible a-arms that are bent??? Thanks in advance for the info. OHHH the footwell I was reffering to are not acutal footwells but the footwell protectors that I have seen pictures of on this site. I would love to purchase a pair...
thanks again guys...regards,

The ones you see here are home made.

Franco,

Maybe you could adjust the rear springs to a stiffer setting and then the IRS wont sag as much. That may keep your rear tires at a straighter angle.

This is what I did, but of course, it didn't do anything for my front end. Mine sag in the front as well as the back. This fix is only a bandaid for the real problem. I'd go with the previous suggestion (which is my plan when I have enough time to install them) and get heavy duty spings from big buck. I've gotten the spring compressor already, just waitin' for the time to install the springs, then they'll be ordered as well.

If I were to speculate at all as to your problem, given the miles on it so far, I'd have to say you've got the "spring sag" issue...that's it.

My 500HO would sag in the rear when towing the PWC to the lake, I adjusted the springs and no more sag in the rear.

Now if there were adjustable springs in the front, that would be nice.

The sag is the price you pay for a soft suspension (ride).

THANKS guys for all your help. I adjusted the rears to the stiffest setting and it helped a little which leads me to belive the springs may be going. I will have to replace them.

Mr. Bill I PM'ed Jack a few days ago. Sent the PM to Jack Whelen but no answer???

Guys, I have noticed some of you have the flat fuel pack on your front racks and I was planning on getting one. How do you guys like it??

thanks again, Franco
