Flat tires

Postby jack whelen » Fri Nov 26, 2004 11:28 am

Last time on the rubicon Larry put a gash in his front tire. We limped it back to camp to repair it ,but pluging the tire didn't work. We tried busting the bead with my quad and jumping on it ,but didn't work . We poured soap around the bead and let it soak , then we broke the bead with my spliting mall(slegehammer end ) We got the tube in and filled the tire , but the tube had a cut in it , lucky I had a patch kit . So if your far away from your vehicle , I recommend carrying a tube, pump, plugs, tire bars ,WD 40 ,tube patch kit. I even carry co2s so if you pop a bead off the rim you can give the tire a good shot of air to reseat the tire on the rim. Spare tires are to bulky to carry. Next tool I'm getting is a atv bead breaker to carry on the quad .

Harbor freight sells a cheapo that I've heard actually works. I have not used it myself though.

That "mini-changer" is also listed on the same page of the Harbor Freight ad. If you've ever tried to work with ATV tires though, your quickly learn you want all of the leverage you can get.

flat tires

Postby jack whelen » Wed Dec 01, 2004 8:53 pm

A month ago I tried to break the beads on two rear tires of a Yamaha Kodiak for my friend- with no luck. I tried everything ,using a bead hammer ( no luck) I then parked the truck on the tire and my quad on the other side and both of us jumped on the tire and it still would not break . The tires were worn out so we proceded to cut them off with a utility knife. I still didn't have any luck getting the beads off, so I had to use the dye grinder to cut the wire inside the rubber in the bead ( didn't smell to good ) then they came right off. I mounted the new 25 " mud lites in about 10 minutes by hand. It took about an hour to get the old tires off. I guess it would have paid to have the right tool for the job . Most of the time they break really easy , but this time was a NIGHTMARE.

I've experienced the same difficulties as Jack. Without the right tools, it's just not gonna happen.
