Tires??

Postby ACLakey » Fri Apr 22, 2005 3:37 pm

I was watching some of your video's and noticed you guys like the 589 and Mudlites. Has anybody tried the Holeshot ATR or Buckhorns for the rock crawling you do? I have had great results on rocks, dirt and in snow with some ATR's.

I've never tried those.... I will say from experience comparing the 589's and mudlites.... the mudlites win for all around tire. Although, I really liked the Good Years....

I'd agree with Terry....the Mudlites are a good all around tire. But I have to say...those 589's...really grip the granite rock..even wet.

I don't know the other brands...the main reason I initially selected the 589's was reputation of ITP and the 6 ply side walls. Even with 6 ply, I've still pinched a nice hole.

Ouch!! I have been thinking strongly about the Mud Lites, but the ATR's work so good I have a hard time trying something different. They are a radial tire and grip rocks like you wouldn't believe. I have had no problems with them at all. For an all around tire I think they perform better than my buddies 589's. He does walk away from me in the mud, but that is the only place he has an advantage. I am on a Kodik 400 for now and he rides a 450S. I am waiting for Polaris to put EFI on the 500 so I can pick one up. Hopefully next year.

I have radial Bighorns on type 4 C's and they hook up real good, as well as being one of the best looking tires out there. Made a big difference to the stock ones. Probably done 250 miles on stock and 300 on Bighorns. Not only did they improve traction and braking, but on the C's they are 3" wider on rear and about 2" on front. Gives it a more assured stance and looks really well planted. 6 ply too!

I had ATRs on my Rincon. They were a decent tire, but for a machine with a plush suspension like a Grizzly or Sportsman, I wouldn't use 'em because they're too stiff.

I have the Bighorn radials on my Grizz and love 'em.

Interesting.

Having come from the Jeeping world....where Biasply is still KING for rock crawling, I haven't considered Radial.

My Willys still has Super Swamper Rock Crawlers...and they're Bias Ply. You can air down Bias Ply A LOT more than Radial tires....hence, their popularity.

I tried Radials....hated 'em. Had to run them (this is before bead lockers) at 10-12 lbs. I run my Super Swampers at 6-8lbs.

BTW...I'm going to move this into tires...for obvious reasons.

I always suspected that my old Blackwater XT 27" bias ply tires were better on the rocks. Now I know why.

No not that bad, just the primary spring needs to be changed when you go up in size or wieght. Getting it right is a bitch. To many spring sizes.

I'm thinking that's why my clutch is always somewhat engaged...even at idle....something brokey.
