Can the 26" 589's hurt my tranny?

Postby Joey2 » Wed Nov 02, 2005 9:22 am

Ok, with the help of the wonderful guys on this site, I think that I want to get the 26" ITP 589's for my 2005 Sportsman 500.

My dealer told me once that doing so (big foot kit) will or could damage my drive train and void the waranty. I do not have a waranty so I don't mind that. But will the tires hurt my quad. I know that many of you guys ride with them (ITP 589's), but most have 700 or 800's.

I understand that performance will be sacrificed. I also understand and know how and when to use LOW Gear.

That being said, will my 500 be ok with the ITP big foot kit? (Black Steel rims with the 589's)

Do I have to make any adjustments or modifications? (Clutch kit)?

Or can I just get the 26" big foot kit and ride?

Thanks.

Your 05 500HO came with 26" stock right?
If so the 26" 589's will have the same load in the trans. There will be a little more weight on each wheel. You will love them.
Your clutch should run the same.
In a word 26" stock to 26" ITP 589s is not a bigfoot kit.

Agreed.....

If anything, maybe a few extra pounds in weight..... Otherwise, I don't see a problem.

Yes I do have the 26" tires, I thank you both for your wise insight in this matter.

Four days ago I spent $876.00 on four BF Goodrich TA/KO's for my F-150. So now I will begin my fund for the Polaris. SWEET! :D

LOL...There's always an ATV fund. :)

Yeah...My 2002 700 came with 25" and I've been running 26" for 2 years now.

I've replaced 1 belt...but that's because a spring in my clutch broke.

Use LOW when you should use LOW....and you'll be fine.

The 500 and 700...essentially are the same thing....except engine Umph.

Ok, I believe that the ATV tire fund is full and BC-offroad .com is offering no shipping charges.

I can get the ITP 589 tires and the ITP C4 black aluminum rims and lugs for $593.00 shipped.

I called Brian at BC and I asked him about the strain on the belt and he mentoined that he had a Sportsman with 27" tires. He said that he went through 3 belts in 200 miles. He recomended that I buy a clutch kit and an upgraded belt.

But I may not do that clutch kit and belt based on the info I received earlier in this post. I may get the tires without the kit.

Remember BC offroad drives the other brand,
Use low when your crawling and going slow, use high when on faster trails.
I'll bet with the Al. rims and the 598's you will be about the same weight.
I do run a heelclicker kit. Still on my first belt 2000 miles.

I doubt you'll have problems, as Mr. Bill mentioned you're not really going with any bigger tire. I went from 25's to 26's and mine has been working fine without the clutch upgraded, of course it's a Suzuki, so your results may no be the same. Ride it a little and see how you like it. I have a clutch kit that I'm going to put in, been waiting for a case gasket before I can do it.
