Cool. I'll post a link to this on the Intrepid forum.

I'm glad you like those tires. I was skeptical of them at first too.

Wow - you don't have to be a rock-crawler to love these tires - just got my set today and they are so nice on the roads too. They soak up the rocks like nobody's business - pure pleasure! Thanks, Ken, for all your raving - you made them an easy choice for me!

Good to hear it. I totally agree on the rock soaking....they eat 'em up like a sponge.

It's a big step buying tires...nothing worse than making a 6 or 7 hundred dollar mistake.

how about driving 1000 miles, hitting the trail and 200 yards in smashing the crap out of your wheel? It might just be me, but that seems a little worse

From another thread:

Sure thing. I'm running 25" bighorns with wheels from MotoSport Alloys on both of our Grizzlies. My camo Grizzly has the Pike's Peak wheels and her special edition has the Climax wheels. We've had these same wheels/tires for a little more than a year. I moved them from the old 660's over to the 700's when we got those:

I originally went with the Bighorns because the guys out in Utah rave about them, especially on rocks. So far I haven't been disappointed. I stuck with 25" because their actual size tends to be a little larger, and we already had "stability issues" due to the large loads we haul along on the backpacking-via-ATV kind of trips. Like this time, when my buddy with only about 5 days on ATVs rolled my wife's old Grizzly:

Image

Yup, those are stock tires/wheels.

With the Bighorn/MotoSport Alloy combination, both Grizzlies are 48.5" wide at the rear. That's important, because out in Utah they have trail gates that are in place to let us 50" max folks in, but keep the wider SxS's out. So if you're over 50", no riding for you on some of their best stuff. Here is an example of one of their gates, although this particular one is quite a bit wider than 50":

Image

I imagine that we'll start to see similar gates out here once the FS gets done with their route designation project.

Hemingray has a set of 26" Bighorns on his Grizzly, and boy does it look sweet. :)

I absolutely agree, these are awesome tires. The ride is so much nicer (of course, being radials) than stock, and reading about them out there says they are nearly flat-free (those stock Dunlops felt like they were just waiting to get punctured).

I do have 26" 'horns on Motosport Alloy Castlerock wheels, I liked the 25's so much, I decided to swap them over to the little Grizzly because of the ride and go for the bigger ones on mine ('07 Grizzly 660) The rear tires do rub the lip of the fenderguard (the black part) when the suspension gets compressed. I've already trimmed them back a bit and I need to firm up the preload a bit to help minimize that. Even on the Motosport Alloy wheels, they do stick out a fair amount - I'm putting Yamaha overfenders on before the rains start as there will be a fair amount of mud flying, I'm sure. I did measure them, I'm still easily under 50" width - should I get to Utah or should the Tahoe miraculously find money to make gates. Ha ha.

Overall I'm happy with the taller ground clearance, although they definitely feel heavier. Some folks change out their clutch kits but I find I am just being easier on the starts and selecting low gear more often.

Interestingly, my speedometer now reads right on - where before it was reading a bit higher than reality.

As Ken and many others elsewhere have mentioned, rock crawling is magnificent, it feels totally confident. They do wrap the rocks like in some pics Ken posted, it's very cool.

I like to change tires to try different makes (and because it's fun getting new tires) but these days, with the Big Horns, I've lost my desire to do so. Do I need therapy? Meds? A younger girlfriend?

I will be hard pressed to ever buy a different tire. I was not only impressed on rocks, but they SPANKED in the snow. I did my first 20 miles on the BlingQuad in snow, and I cant believe the difference between the BH and the 589's riding with me.

Good point Brad, and because of this I've changed my stance on Bighorns. They Suck! 2000 miles and no flats, it'll probably be at least another 1000 before I could even entertain the idea of new tires, and that will only be the rears. Not only are they taking away my shopping fun but I believe Bryan at BC will start to wonder what has happened when no one is calling to order tires.

Larry we need to start a Bighorn support group or something. I no longer look at other tires. That's just wrong, man!

Brad it has a number of other advantages though, it frees up cash for other accessories and toys I can't live without
