27" Tires on older Sportsmans

Postby Ken » Wed Apr 12, 2006 11:32 am

What's everyone's opininon?

Forget wheel rub....I'm talking more axels...tranny....belt

The newer 800, comes standard with 26"...so going up 1" to 27" is no big deal.

But going from 25" to 27" on older 700's is 2" (or slightly less).

Other than power...I don't think the 800 suspension and such, is all that much different.

I would imagine, that doing the 800 clutch upgrade would be one thing you should do.

Sell it and get a 800..lol

Your 700?? The 700 hasn't changed since it came out in 02 and it's still the same drive train as the 800.. The one change to the front drive lines is cv joints on both ends. The older bikes have a u joint on the Diff side..

They are both strong.. The reason they changed it is the CV joint made for easier steering... I have seen Matt tracks on both bikes (same owner) one 03 and one 05 700 and the 05 blew out a cv joint and the 03 has had no problems with drivelines.. I have also seen two rangers blow front Cv joints.. But the ranger drive shafts and CV joints are smaller. I think the old style U joints are stronger. IMO

Thanks Chadd. I thought so.

I'm pretty sure I'm going up to 27" for my next set of tires.

I know several guys around here that put a 1.5"-2" spring spacer in the front struts to level out the front of their quads to fit 27" tires. It was an easy mod, and gives them plenty of room for the larger tires. Plus leveling the quad out makes them look better in my opinion.
