New Gun S&W M&P compact

Not sure if you guys are gun / hunting people, but im assuming no one will mind if I keep a log of info here so I can wright a review about a new gun I picked up. I don’t want to post any thing on the gun / forums tell I have 1k-3k bullets down range but want to keep track of info tell then. Hope you don’t mind ken..

Picked up a new gun today (S&W M&P 40 compact) took it out and fired 250 rounds through it to get a fell for it. At first i was disappointed with it, the shot groups where way off, then i see the shot groups are good and tight just the sights are off. So i adjust my aim and start to fall in love with it but after 50-100 shots it starts to have issues again. Thats when i realize it's not the gun its me and im anticipating the shot and pushing the gun at the last mili sec. The trigger pull is odd on this gun at least to me. I’ve never had a S&W but the trigger pull length is crazy to me i just keep expecting it to pop so much sooner then it does its a little heavy but should lighting up some. Looks like i need to go back to some snap caps / dry fire practice with it to learn it. Also when cleaning it i noticed after only 1 range day the white paint on the front sight is already falling out easy fix but worry some none the less. I also bought a crimson trace laser grip for it that was amazing. Right out of the box the grips where zeroed on, during strong day light there almost useless but i was out there tell sunset and wow i was hitting cans / clay's 60-70 feet away with a compact with out any zeroing done. Most of those shots where done from the hip as well with out lining up the sites and only using the laser.

o and p.s. wolf 40 ammo sucks in this gun (expected its a cheap dirty, iron shell ammo) but in 250 rounds i had 9-15 slide jams and 2 failed to fires on primers AND 1 SQUID now thats a shitty avg. but as stated expected its the cheapest ammo there is....

and a shot of my Fav gun just a plinker 22 pump but o i can piss off some people with it in shoot outs.

I ordered up a 9mm conversion barrel and some mags for the gun today to save money at the range on ammo, cool feature of this gun just change the barrel to get a 9mm / 357 / or 40 cal (on the 9mm u need mag's as well). Theres no need to change any springs or extractor.

Picked up a new deactivation spring to get ride of the Mag safety (even if theres a round in the chamber and cocked if theres no mags the gun wont fire). You can order them with out this but then theres some ugly white writing down the side of your barrel saying "Caution this firearm can fire with out a magazine", which looks like crap on a all black gun.

update: I got the 9mm conversion and have fired about 150-200 rounds of varying ammo. I only had one failer to eject and it was on the ammo brand brown bear (super cheap) they use a laquer on there case and this one had a drip on it. I dont want to say anything about acc / groups of the ammo since i had to shot all offhand since i had a splint / on my right hand. I also swaped my springs to get ride of the Mag safety was simple and well worth it.

ya i had limited it to the xd and the M&P, there both top heavy but the XD even more so. Also the grip on the M&P fits my hands a lot better then the XD. I really wanted a beretta px4 storm sub compact but its a no go in CA so i settled on the M&P.

Roon if u want advice / help on picking out a gun ill through in my 2 cents but im by no means a expert. Id go with a semi auto hand gun first people will tell you other wise but there funner and the triggers are simpler to figure out (look for a single action or a double action first shot / single action after) Since its your first i wouldnt get any thing bigger then a 9mm. It all depends on how much $ u want to spend as well, for 200-300 you can get nice .22 plinker, or spend 500 for a decent 9mm or spend 1200 for a 1911 frame 9mm the skys the limit. The best thing to do is go to a larger box store that has lots of handguns in stock so you can fell them in your hand and pick the the top 2 and go home and research them and see if people liek them or not etc. Also get a full size handgun first easy to aim / shoot with a longer barrel.

If you go to a store check out these main brands, Smith & Wesson (stay away from the sigma line), Glock, Springfield, Beretta and remember each brand has several modals that differ greatly on feel and function. Most people tend to like glocks but the handle angle and feel to me is one of the worst. Dont get a gun on what other people say or tell you to get, the gun that is comfortable in your hand is the gun you will shoot more so thats the gun you will become most proficient in.

very good advice.
i might add
whats the reason you want a gun?
for shooting/ target practice?

for home defense?

or both??
i needed both so i chose a .40 cal instead of the 9mm because i like the stopping power/ killing power. but the 9mm is cheaper to shoot and a well placed bullet will do the trick nicely :)

What a coincidence, I'm 3 days into my 10-day wait for my own new S&W M&P! Mine is the .22 cal 15-22 MOE FDE rifle (this one but with a 10 rd mag). I ordered 4 extra mags and I'm going to put a cheap red dot sight on it with a riser. The red dot should co-witness with the flip-up standard sights. Between you and me, the beer cans won't stand a chance. :D

I've got an old Remington Model 12 that looks like your plinker, but no external hammer. Unlike yours, it probably hasn't been shot in 30 years and it needs a good cleaning.

Brian....Don't mind at all....most of us have guns.

I'd say the only thing I mind is porn...but that's not true either...LOL.

I have an M&P in 9 and one in 45, standard size. I love them both.

I found an article a while back that went into detail about doing a trigger job on it, I'll see if I can't dig that up. Pull on mine is stupid long too, nature of the beast with these things. It is one of the most comfortable shooting pistols I have ever put in my hand though.

Ive seen a few articles about how to lighting up the trigger some (get it to 5 -5.5 pounds) any lighter id need to send to a smith, but nothing about shorting up the over length. It only matters on the first shot but dam thats a important shot  , you can feel it re-set when letting off but that first shot im still getting use to it. I also made my final vote on it on the fact of all the compacts it felt / fit in my hand the best (i never tried the full size but assume its even better).

I was eye balling those but was on a mission last few times i was in stores so didnt want to get distracted and end up with one instead of a compact handgun so i didnt even touch one. Ill have to break out my 22 handgun with a red dot scope for the beer cans it has the most experience at those particular targets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta_U22_Neos)

And thanks ken i figured as much but you just never know. Some people lose there mind/brains with any subject about firearms.

Here ya go Brian, same one I grabbed a copy of before. He seems to address pull and length of pull. You can probably pick and choose what you want to do.
