New dude here!
Well, Keith, Loppy and Nick all sucked me into this 4WD quad thing! I've owned 2 Honda TRX 250x's for years and ridden many miles on them, but this is something different.
I went out the other night and picked up a used Sportsman 700 (carb'd) and now I am starting the learning curve all over again.
I have a question - my 700 is an early '04 model, manufacture date in Feb '03. The VIN says it's an '04 and the features indicate it is. However, my gas gauge is non existant. When I first turn the key one, the area that would indicate fuel level is completely blank. There's no pump icon or bar on the right side to show level. The rest of the display is correct, just not this.
Would this indicate a sending unit issue? Perhaps the early '04's didn't have the fuel gauge?? If that's the case, can it be retrofitted??
Sure, I can always just pop the cap off and peer down in, but a gauge would be much nicer.
Ken

I would just go with the old remove the cap look in thing.Would this indicate a sending unit issue? Perhaps the early '04's didn't have the fuel gauge?? If that's the case, can it be retrofitted??
I will look I remember seeing some caps with a gauge build in. Scrambler model I think.

First of all....Nice purchase, and welcome.
Secondly...I wouldn't get all hot and bothered over the gas gauge. It's not "really" accurate. It's only a guide, as far as I'm concerned.
The best method is open, and look down. When the gas hits the plastic middle, you've got about 1/2 left.
The good news (I think) is, that year still has the reserve switch....so you get a warning before you REALLY run out.

Thanks for all the good words and I was kind of figuring it had something to do with that damn 04.5 thing.
LOL at the gas station comment!!
I do have the reserve on the fuel petcock, noticed that last night when I was cleaning her up. Not sure how much is in there, hopefully enough to get me somewhere near some gas. Just gotta keep that in the back of my mind.
I'm looking forward to changing my direction from the Jeep world to the ATV world and having some fun. I saw the pics of your last trip to Moab and I DEFINITELY want to do that in the very near future.
The great thing about this hobby, my wife is excited about it, where she could care less about the Jeep.

Kendo,
I have a Willys Jeep....and it hardly gets out anymore...the Quad is MUCH more fun...sometimes more work, but it's fun doing it.
As for the wife getting excited...it really is something women can do. Even if they aren't into the hard core Rubicon like stuff....there's plenty of great trail rides...even exploring in Nevada that is a blast, and not super difficult. The beauty is....everyone gets to "Drive".

I live off of Bell Rd, about a mile in from Hwy 49. I work at DeWitt too, so I'm livin the high life!!
I'm looking forward to the tamer stuff myself. I have been running a CJ7 for many, many years and it just isn't that much fun to me any more. My wife never got into the Jeep thing, perhaps because of the stories of drunken stupidity that I came back with?
I'd like to get together and pick your brain on this Polaris stuff especially.
